When nothing stands in our way, or when, in a particular situation, we notice an opportunity that we hadn’t seen before?

For me, spiritual freedom does not mean that everything happens exactly as I would like it to. Rather, it means that I am gradually coming to understand what assumptions I am working from, what I am clinging to, and where I can make more conscious choices.

The world we are helping to shape

From my spiritual perspective, the meaning we ascribe to it is also part of the world we experience. Our fears, our expectations and our familiar narratives sometimes form a framework that we no longer even notice. When I speak of an illusion or a programme, I am also referring to this unquestioned framework.

This does not mean that the pain, the betrayal or the other person’s responsibility cease to be real. Examining our inner perspective is no substitute for recognising what has happened and, if necessary, how we can protect ourselves.

Yet through our decisions, we do play a part in shaping our environment. It matters how we speak to someone, what we commit to, and where we draw the line. A loving approach can create an opportunity for connection, but it does not give us the right to dictate the other person’s response.

Knowledge only comes to life when we put it into practice

Understanding can broaden our scope for action. If we recognise what expectations we bring to a situation, we no longer have to base our approach solely on that one expectation.

That is why the link between learning and personal experience is important to me. It is one thing to know that there may be various motives behind a person’s behaviour, and quite another to actually ask, in a conversation, about things we had previously taken for granted.

Expressing our feelings can also help us to understand our experiences more clearly. It is not the act of talking about what we have been through that makes it real, but putting it into words can bring us closer to recognising what we need.

The knowledge we gain does not put an end to all conflicts. It can, however, help us to avoid simply repeating the same answers.

Here I am talking about the knowledge we gain through learning and experience. I distinguish this from knowledge in the spiritual sense: that inner certainty which does not simply arise from the accumulation of further information.

Letting go is not the same as giving up

For me, non-attachment is the freedom not to insist on the same outcome at all costs. We can examine what still nourishes us, and what is simply a matter of habit in our lives.

That doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier. Drawing a line under something can be painful, even if it later opens up new opportunities. We don’t need to be grateful for it in advance, and there’s no need to rush things.

Accepting the course of events does not mean doing nothing. There are things we can let go of, things that are worth taking action on, and things where we need help.

Faith, inner awareness and connection

In this perspective, I experience faith as an inner confidence that leaves room even for what I cannot yet see clearly. By this I do not mean a complete absence of doubt, but rather an openness to the possibility that there may be more options than I am currently aware of.

When we feel tense in a situation, sometimes even a brief pause can give us the chance to examine the story unfolding within us. What actually happened, and what am I assuming about it? This doesn’t automatically resolve every difficulty, but it can prompt a clearer question.

In this sense, accepting ourselves and understanding others are not two separate paths. Through connection, we can experience a sense of belonging without, at the same time, giving up our differences.

For me, freedom does not mean that I do not belong to anyone or anything. Rather, it means that I am able to be increasingly present, in a conscious way, in whatever I am connected to.

With love,
Georgina
Soul4you

When do we feel free?
