It examines a narrower one: what if a message from a medium does contain genuine information, but does not come from where the medium thinks it does?

Even today, I’m still not sure of the answer. But I have a model that explains a great many things. That is what this essay is about — and also about where the limits lie.

1. What are we talking about?

Mediums, spirit-seers, channelers, and many others who practise this art. Under different names and in different contexts, but there is one point where they all touch on the same area: communication with those who have passed away. And a recurring theme in these accounts is that information does indeed come through — and some of it can be verified.

Some of these have actually been investigated. Leonora Piper, the most extensively studied medium of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was studied for decades by William James, the Harvard psychologist, and researchers from the Society for Psychical Research; In 1909, James wrote a 120-page study of her 69 séances. They concluded that information was being conveyed which could not be explained by the ordinary senses — but James himself did not accept that the deceased were speaking through the medium.

Source: James, W. (1909): Report on Mrs Piper’s Hodgson-control. Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research 23, 2–121.

However, the various systems do not present the same picture of what lies on the other side of this connection. In one, there are souls awaiting salvation. In another, a conscious presence offering guidance. In a third, a deceased person who no longer remembers their earthly life.

This essay is about what happens when someone comes into contact with someone who is no longer with us.

2. The pattern — what remains

This section is based on the premise that everything is vibration. This is a metaphysical perspective: it is not a physical statement, nor is it my own discovery — it has long been a feature of metaphysical thinking. As far as physics is concerned, it is relevant here that Einstein described matter itself as a form of energy.

And energy is never lost. According to the law of conservation of energy, the energy of a closed system remains constant: it is transformed, but it is neither destroyed nor created from nothing. This was described by Mayer, Joule and Helmholtz in the 1840s, and in 1918 Emmy Noether demonstrated what follows from it.

References: Einstein, A. (1905): Is the inertia of a body dependent on its energy content? (1918): Invariante Variationsprobleme. Nachrichten von der Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, 235–257.

And it is not just energy that is conserved. Information does not disappear either. In 2004, Stephen Hawking publicly retracted his earlier position, and in a paper published the following year, he concluded that elementary quantum gravitational interactions do not lose information — in other words, black hole evaporation also preserves information. This has remained the prevailing view ever since, although the debate within physics is not yet settled.

Source: Hawking, S. W. (2005): Information loss in black holes. Physical Review D 72, 084013. — „Elementary quantum gravity interactions do not lose information or quantum coherence.”

Physics describes the conservation of energy and information. What I write below is my own point of view. The only thing I consider important is this: if nothing ceases to exist but merely transforms, then it is not inherently pointless to ask what will become of what a person has imprinted on the world throughout their entire life.

My view on this is simple. Whatever a person has thought, said and done in their lifetime remains in the form of energy or information. When they die, their body ceases to exist. But the person they were — their thoughts, feelings, habitual reactions and way of speaking — remains there as information.

Not as a person. Not as a conscious respondent. As an imprint.

And I think psychics read this. They don’t converse with ghosts, nor do they talk to the dead who are still here. They pick up energy or information.

This is not a new idea — at least not the part that is being disputed. Charles Richet, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1913, the Treatise on Metapsychics In his work entitled […], he wrote: it is not necessary to postulate a disembodied human being to explain the phenomenon. He posited a capacity for acquiring information, which he termed ‘cryptesthesia’, and which is discussed in contemporary literature as the ‘living-agent psi’ hypothesis.

From here on, however, we take a different path. This hypothesis suggests that the information comes from the living: from the mind of the medium or the person consulting them. I believe it comes from more than just that — that one can also read what a person has left behind in their own life. I cannot prove this, and the literature does not claim it. What we do agree on, however, is that in order for someone to receive genuine information, it is not necessary to assume that someone is consciously responding after their death.

References: Richet, C. Getting into the right frame of mind

How can someone gain access to a pattern?

As I see it: by getting into the right frame of mind.

Some people are very sensitive to the traces left behind by another person. Perhaps because they are in a similar state of mind. Perhaps because some kind of connection — family, love, a shared experience — still endures. Perhaps because their nervous system is more receptive to it.

This is neither a mystical gift nor a matter of being chosen. It is a degree of sensitivity. Some people are born with it. Some learn it. And some slip into it unwittingly.

4. Why is it sometimes accurate and sometimes inaccurate?

One of the most valid critical questions is this: how can a medium provide verifiable details — names, memories, characteristic turns of phrase — about someone they did not know?

In this model, this makes sense: throughout their entire life, that person has inscribed who they were into the pattern. If someone can tune into it, it becomes legible.

But this does not explain why the same medium gets it wrong on other occasions. Several factors come into play in such a communication. There is the pattern itself. Then there is the medium’s own mind, which does not step outside the process but injects its own vocabulary and associations into it — which is why the messages from a particular medium always resemble one another in style, even when they appear to come from different sources. There are the expectations of the person turning to them: what we want to hear, we are more likely to hear, and the medium will pick up on this. And then there are our shared cultural images of death, which also seep through. The degree of accuracy depends on how much comes through from the first source and how much the others add to it.

5. Conclusion — there is only one reality

There is only one reality — multi-layered and saturated with information. In this reality, everything that has ever happened has left its mark. And death is not a boundary. It is a transformation of form.

Anyone who has hitherto believed that they are talking to spirits is, I think, not mistaken in thinking that they are making contact with something. It’s just that the term is different. In one language, it’s ‘talking to spirits’. As I call it: tuning into a pattern.

With love,

Georgina

Soul4you

References

Einstein, A. Where I refer to physics or research, I distinguish what the source supports from what I believe; an analogy can help us think without establishing a mechanism.

Years ago, a sentence came to me that became the beginning of a long enquiry: if you do not understand death, you do not understand life. I have not finished living with that question.

Here I approach a narrower one. Suppose a message attributed to someone who has died contains information that can genuinely be verified: would its accuracy establish where it came from?

I do not think those are the same question. This essay is about the distinction, the model through which I understand it, and the point at which explanation must give way to an honest limit.

The information and its proposed source

Mediums and people who describe themselves as communicating with the dead work within different spiritual frameworks. Rather than settle those frameworks in advance, I want to separate the content of a reported message from the interpretation attached to it.

If a name is correct, the name is correct. That does not by itself show that a deceased person consciously supplied it.

Before reaching a conclusion, we would also need to know what information was already available, how specific the statement was before it was interpreted, and what was recorded when it was first made. A striking match can deserve examination without carrying its own explanation.

William James approached this difficulty in his report on Leonora Piper's purported “Hodgson-control”, weighing possible explanations rather than treating the identification of the communicator as settled. (James's 1909 report, reprinted in William James on Psychical Research) His conclusion did not amount either to decisive proof of Hodgson's survival or to an unequivocal rejection of that possibility. (James, concluding discussion)

The historical case matters to me because it makes room between an experience and the first explanation offered for it. I do not cite James as someone who proved the model I am about to describe.

What I mean by a pattern

My starting point is metaphysical: I understand reality as vibration and relationship, and I believe that a person's life leaves an energetic and informational imprint. I am not using “vibration” here as a claim that every thought is a measured physical oscillation of a known kind.

By a pattern, I mean the trace of a life: characteristic ways of responding, feeling, speaking and relating. In my view, that trace is not exhausted by what remains in documents or in the conscious memories of people who knew the person.

I believe something of it remains within reality itself. This is a statement of my model, not an experimentally demonstrated archive.

The distinction at its centre is simple. A trace of someone is not necessarily that person consciously answering.

When I refer to “the field”, I mean the wider reality in which I believe these patterns persist. I am not identifying it with a particular field in physics, nor supplying a physical location from which a medium can be shown to retrieve a message.

The life of the body ends; the person is no longer present in the familiar bodily way. My proposal is that the informational pattern is not thereby erased.

What I think a sensitive person may encounter is that pattern. Not necessarily a spirit waiting nearby, and not necessarily a conscious respondent choosing each word.

This is the model I find meaningful. I cannot establish from it that every apparent contact is genuine, or that another person's experience must have the same explanation.

What physics does, and does not, give us

Conservation laws can be useful points of reflection, but their precision matters. Noether's theorem connects continuous symmetries with conservation laws under the mathematical conditions of the theory in question. (Peter Olver, “Emmy Noether and Symmetry”)

In the relevant setting, conservation of energy is connected with time-translation symmetry: the absence of an explicit change in the laws under a shift of the time origin, not the reversal of time. (John Baez, “Noether's Theorem in a Nutshell”, University of California, Riverside) Confusing time translation with time reversal changes the scientific claim.

That result concerns a conserved physical quantity. It does not establish that a person's thoughts, memories or characteristic phrases remain assembled in a form another mind can read.

Likewise, Stephen Hawking's 2005 paper argues for information preservation in black-hole formation and evaporation within its quantum-gravitational treatment. (Hawking, “Information loss in black holes”) The information at issue is part of a technical discussion of physical states and their evolution.

The paper does not establish an accessible record of a human life or a mechanism for mediumship. Moving from its conclusion to such a record would require an additional argument and evidence that the paper does not provide.

This is the boundary I want to keep clear. I cannot take “energy is conserved”, substitute “personal meaning” for energy, and then claim that physics has demonstrated my metaphysics.

I can still ask what a life leaves within reality. The question remains worth asking to me, but its value does not depend on borrowing a scientific proof that I do not have.

Why accurate information would not settle the explanation

Michael Sudduth's discussion of mediumship examines competing accounts that attribute the information either to surviving persons or to proposed psychic capacities of living agents. (Sudduth, “Super-Psi and the Survivalist Interpretation of Mediumship”, 2009) His argument concerns the explanatory demands placed on those hypotheses, not proof that either mechanism has been established.

That distinction helps frame my own position. Even if one accepted a particular item as information acquired in an unusual way, the source would remain a further question.

My model is not simply the claim that a medium reads the consulting person's mind. I propose access to an imprint that is not limited to what a living participant consciously remembers.

I therefore go beyond what the cited discussion establishes. I am not presenting Sudduth as the originator of my model, or using the existence of an academic debate as confirmation that the field I describe has been demonstrated.

The common point is narrower: content and agency must not be assumed to be identical. Knowing something about a person does not, by itself, show that the person is speaking.

Attunement, not merely a frame of mind

How, in my model, might someone encounter a pattern? The word I use is attunement.

I do not mean simply adopting a receptive mood or thinking sympathetically about someone. I mean a real energetic relationship, as I understand it, between the person attending and the pattern encountered.

A family connection, affection or a shared experience may be relevant within that account. I also allow for differences in sensitivity, without claiming to have demonstrated a neurological mechanism or a reliable method for training it.

For me, sensitivity does not confer superior worth. It does not make someone chosen above others, exempt from error or entitled to direct another person's life.

I can take an experience seriously while still asking how it was interpreted. Attunement, if it occurs as I understand it, would not remove the interpreting mind from the process.

Why a message may contain both recognition and error

Within my model, an impression is not necessarily received as a complete, unambiguous sentence. The person conveying it may contribute their own associations, vocabulary and expectations.

The listener also interprets what is offered. A statement can become more specific in the telling than it was at the beginning, or acquire significance through a connection made afterwards.

Cultural images of death and relationship may influence how both people understand the encounter. I regard these as considerations to examine, not as a complete theory that has already explained every report.

There is also a limit to how much my model can explain by appeal to interference. If every accurate statement is counted as evidence of a pattern, while every mistake is attributed to the interpreter, the model becomes difficult to challenge.

I do not want it protected in that way. A proposed explanation should remain distinct from the observations it is meant to account for.

In practical terms, I would want an original record of a claim, not only the version remembered after a match was found. I would also want misses and ambiguities to remain visible beside apparent successes.

This does not require contempt for the person describing the experience. Careful examination is compatible with respect.

One reality, and the limits of my account

I believe in one reality that is more layered than our ordinary description of it. Within that reality, I understand death as a transformation of form rather than the erasure of every trace of a life.

That is the conviction behind the title. The field that holds everything is the name I give to this metaphysical understanding, not the conclusion of a laboratory experiment.

My proposal also leaves something important unanswered. An imprint model does not by itself settle the separate question of whether personal consciousness survives death.

What it does is challenge an automatic inference. An experience interpreted as a conversation may, in my view, be contact with a pattern rather than a dialogue with a conscious deceased person.

Someone who holds a different spiritual understanding does not have to accept mine. Nor should a bereaved person be pressured to treat a message as an obligation, a command or the only route to continuing their relationship with someone they loved.

For me, the enquiry remains open without becoming empty. I can say what I believe, take experiences seriously, and still distinguish a meaningful model from something I have proved.

With love,
Georgina
Soul4you
","_s4y_en_cim":"The Field That Holds Everything","_s4y_en_kivonat":"

1

post-373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-spiritualis
["GET
